Beckman Vineyards Grenache (Estate) Santa Ynez Valley 2010 $25
Grenache is one of the most widely planted grape varietals in the world. Known as Garnacha in Spain, Cannonau in Sardegna, or Grenache in France and many other parts of the world, this grape is grown and enjoyed by so many people. From the austere style made in southern Rhône to the giant jammy style of the San Joaquin valley, I feel this grape has really found balance and made a home in the Santa Ynez valley.
The wine that Beckman Vineyards makes is a balance of two styles. Leaning more towards the French style of structure, balance and a little bit of reserved character, the wine still packs plenty of California punch that is a hallmark of the Rhône style wines from the area east of Santa Barbara wine country. Obviously, I wouldn't turn down a chance to have it with some Santa Maria tri-tip, but it's elegant yet muscular enough for a little plate of Cassoulet.
La Gruta del Sol Cow, Sheep, and Goat Spain $30/lb
La Gruta del Sol, meaning the cave of the Sun, is a newer cheese for us. It is cured in olive oil and is a blend of three milks: cow, sheep, and goat. It is a harder cheese with a streak of milky acidity running through the mid palate. Plenty of potent flavor but not strong enough to offend a palate that prefers lighter styled cheeses.
