A rock star of a wine from one of my favorite producers in Burgundy. Domaine Meo-Camuzet makes great wine, and 2009 was a strong warm vintage in Burgundy that produced some very sought after collector wines that can cost you an arm and a leg.
This vintage and this producer is more known for its red wines, but this white is an exception to both those rules. The Haut-Cotes de Nuits runs above the hills of Grand Cru vineyards in the Northern portion of the Cote d'Or. Often the wines are rather thin and generic, mostly for day drinking with lunch by the locals.
This is a flashy Chardonnay; a result and combination of Domaine and vintage coming together to make a wonderful opulent wine that drinks far above its appellaton. In fact, this wine comes from the village of Flagey-Echezeaux and is located within a few hundreds yards of the Grand Cru vineyard of Echezeaux, truly special property. Speaking of special properties, this is a Monopole, meaning only Mel-Camuzet makes wine from this vineyard. As would be done in Burgundy, eat it with some stinky cheese!
Vacherin Mont d'Or
Cow
Switzerland
$45 for 12oz ea
The Legend is here. That special time of year when the cheese gods smile upon us and give us the best cheese known to man. Sorry Epoisses...step aside Parmiggiano...you're out. Made from raw alpine Swiss cows milk, this is the cheese to eat tonight and every night until January when we say good-bye to our friend for another year.
Something metallic... something yeasty...
