Frog's Leap "La Grenouille Rouganté" Napa Valley2011 $18
Napa Valley is usually the furthest thing from my mind when I think about high quality Rosé, but the folks at Frog's Leap have made me rethink what is possible out of California's most famous wine growing region.
Starting off with the pure intention of making a great Rosé, wine makers John Williams and Paula Moschetti reached way back into the old history of Napa. This is not a saignée...this Rosé is intentionally cultivated in the vineyard earmarked for this special 1,400 case production.
They created a wine made from century old vines from two of the grapes that have way more to do with California becoming a wine state than cabernet sauvignon would like to think. A blend of 59% Valdiguie (Napa Gamay) and 41% Zinfandel produces a wine in the style of yesteryear coming in at a scant 12.1% alcohol.
Completely dry, the wine is as delicious as it is refreshing. You would never think this wine was from Provence, but why would you want to when we can make something this good with our home varietals? Try it by itself on a hot day, with grilled whole fish or perhaps some cheese.
Picandou Goats Milk Perigord, France $10 ea for 125g
Simple is beautiful. There is nothing complicated about this soft spreadable goats milk cheese. It is wonderfully smooth and elegant, fresh as fresh can be. You could dress up this cheese with some peppercorns or olive oil drizzled over the top, but I think that's gilding the lily. I take mine with some of Mrs. Perlis' rustic Boulés we carry Wednesday through Saturday.
Something Sweet... California Honey & Basque Pepper $13.50 for 9oz A little salty, a little sweet, a little spicy!
